OK; I believe it is an issue we have to address.  Would you prefer

    _*PACKAGE_* : global             -- Boot, please, *PACKAGE* is global
    callingPackage := _*PACKAGE_*
    -- ... do some work ...
    _*PACKAGE_* := callingPackage

instead?
