I agree.... let's use APR to start with. BUT can I suggest we keep careful track of where and how we use it. Then if we wish to remove the usage later by writing our own code we can.

My personal preference is that something like AXIOM could be done without a portability layer ( i.e. in pure standard C) - but I don't want to hold anyone up.
