control characters in XML results not properly escaped

0x07 is not legal XML, escaped or not.- the only legal chars <0x20 are CR, LF
and TAB.

The bug is that we arent detecting illegal characters and throwing an exeption
to let your code know the nature of the problem. 

If you want to send arbitrary binary, use a byte[] field to force base64 encoding
