Hmm.. I do not believe there's going to be anything we can do about this for 
1.1 Final.  You're working with a fairly large datastructure and the Calendar 
objects just make it worse given that each individual date value needs to be 
parsed in addition to creating the objects.

As this doesn't necessarily represent a bug (it's more for a performance 
enhancement request) I'm going to reclassify as an "enhancement" and set the 
target milestone for Post 1.1.

In the meantime, patches are welcome if you happen to figure out how to improve 
the parsing performance before any of us gets a chance to revisit this.
