I am not religeous about it, but I can't think that a minute wouldn't be a good compromise between timely response and slow machines/network. I will point out that I believe this has to be 60 seconds of *nothing* happening, not just 60 seconds of data transfer. But I could be very wrong about this. Anyone have detail knowledge of the SO_TIMEOUT option in Java?
