I have been looking into my problem as described in comment#11 and the result 
is:

It looks like the suggestion mentioned in coment#9 is implemented in rev:257585
(timeout is being passed down to the sock.connect call i HTTPSender). Nice work
- maybe this bug should be marked as FIXED.

My problem was that Eclipse had put up an TCP/IP monitor in the middle (based on
HTTP redirects) on my locale developing machine. So if my client avoided
contacting eclipses TCP/IP monitor then everything worked fine.

So if Axis have a problem handling redirects, Eclipse's TCP/IP monitor doesnt
work or if I dont understand the situation right is still a question.
