Walter, sorry I missed your earlier email. I had a similar issue and 
resolved it by removing the log4j.properties from axis.jar. I found it 
odd that it was there in the first place - I don't want a third party 
library controlling where the logs go on my server!

As for the second problem - you've almost certainly got log4j-core.jar 
in your classpath, not log4j.jar. log4j-core is about half the size and 
doesnt include RollingFileAppender.
