please describe the deployment process

Could someone please explain how the deployment process works.
ie if I wanted to deploy some web services that use axis and don't want to use the adminclient how would I do so?

basically I'm looking for information as to how the servlet maps a webservice request to an actual webservice.

The examples talk about webinf/services which don't exist in the 1.0 download. there is a directory for webinf/classes/samples but how does the axis know what to map where?
