Well a database driven forum is also searchable and much better that the
search facility of the mailing list! As fas as concerned the irc channel, it
depends how many users are online , if they are going to be online , and if
the are going to join the irc session!

There is an IRC channel on Axis on undernet.org, though I forget its name.

Also, emails have a nice feature: they are a searchable archive open to all.
Which makes them a good discussion tool.
