I forgot to mention that I actually have this working in a pure-Java version which is hand coded and ignores the WSDL. The key issue is that the MS boys want to point their tools to the WSDL and not write any code! :-) So I'm happy to generate the server side code by pseudo-hand, and I'm not that fussed if ?wsdl gives the wrong result as long as I have the right WSDL at hand to give the MS boys. The key for me is that I can give them some WSDL and have their tools generate something that works! If you use WSDL2Java on a wsdl file that generates working .Net services, then you should be able to generate enough of an axis service that you can alter it by hand to do what you want. NB, in the last solution, you can tell an Axis service what WSDL you want it to serve up when queried with ?wsdl. Since your goal is to interop with .Net, you serve up whatever works for .Net. This avoids the round-trip problem you describe.
