An alternative to the SSL (and protocol dependency) is to use XML Encryption (supported by Apache XML Security 1.1 (Beta) and IBM XML Security Suite.

Just a follow-up on this question. If the axis uses  HTTP/SSL, then is there a need  to sign SOAP messages ?
