Sorry, Thomas, I have no idea why the generated WSDL is misleading. I'm fairly new to Axis so there could well be a good reason that I'm not aware of. I think it uses the same code as Java2WSDL does, so you could try experimenting with that tool (part of the Axis distribution) to find out what it does in different situations.
