I managed to get it to build on my OSX box at home, though you have to

It does compile ok with gcc versions 2.95 through to 3.2.3. I've only tried it on OSX with 3.1, as that's what apple ships.

The problems come when you try to do anything with it. I tried building
and installing the perl libs for it, but they just hang in the make tests.
I've tried tracing them, but it doesn't seam to give any hints.
Is this a known problem?

What we've found is that Apple's C++ runtime library deadlocks itself when a process dynamically loads dbxml. This effects the Perl and Python APIs, but the C++ and Java APIs work OK. If you can grab a stack trace from the hung process you might be able to confirm this. We're a bit stuck on this until apple admits that this is a problem with their code, or we come up with a work around :-(
