That's a nice mockup. I wonder if the direction changed since then, because Unity was just updated to change the Dash visual design<http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/9263/workspace1002u.png>whenever a Lens is open to fix this bug <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/750358>.
Now, I wonder why only Dash is desaturated, while the panel is also inactive when a Lens is open.
