I did have the probate now that I remember for Isabel but it only gave her name as Isabel Sousa. It listed her children that were still living all with the name of Holmes but nothing else. A cousin I had at the time in Modesto went to Hanford and got copies of the papers from there. They sold her home for 450.00 dollars back in 1936 and she owed back taxes and other items which took up all the money. Her son Frank Holmes nor the rest of the family had the money to pay to keep the property. It was a large corner lot with a two story house and basement. I don't have the probate for Primo Sousa. I will have to find out how to get that with out having to go there. I don't get out much because I take care of my Mom with Alzheimers full time. So I only have the internet. I will research the how to on the web site for genealogy like Cheri Mello suggested. Thanks, Vivan

To: Azores@googlegroups.com Date: Monday, October 27, 2008, 5:32 PM Hi Vivian, Try getting the probates for these people. Maybe there birth names will be in the probates. The probate might be a big wealth of information. I found in my Portuguese Great Grandmothers probate one of the last names that they went by FRANCISCO that I didn't know about until I ordered a copy of her probate. It also listed her children and there relation to there brothers and sisters as 1/2 brothers and 1/2 sisters which verified what I thought in the 1st place that my Great Grandmother was married 1 time before she married my Great Grandfather. Kim -------------- Original message from Vivian Christy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: -------------- Hi E, I know that is because my grand mother wrote a small bio and in that she said what happened when they first arrived in Boston, Mass when she was about 7 yrs old. She said her father came here a year before they did and had rented a farm in Oso Flaco, San Luis Obispo County. They stayed in Boston at a Hotel until they recieved money to take the train from Boston to Guadalupe, Calif. She did not say the year. I have searched for them in the census but was not able to find them until 1930 but only found the parents not the children. Could not find them all together as a family in the 1900's. I know they moved around from her bio. They had a prominent relative Isable Lewis a cousin that lived in San Jose and they stayed there awhile. Thank you for your help and the census and WWI records. May be we can figure out why they say the father is Frank Holmes and that they were all born in the U.S. My grandmother lied about her age. She also lied on her S.S. record and said she was born in 1900 which is wrong. She put her mothers name on that record as Elizbeth King. That is also not true. I did find the Obits for Primo Souza in 1930 he died and also Isabel Sousa in 1936. That did not help as far as why the children list the father as Frank Holmes? Thanks for your help and for everyones help. Here are the census records I have found, I am also sending to list so others on list do not have to duplicate research. 1920 US census Along Sierra Road, Oakdale, Stanislaus County, CA Frank Holmes 38, b. CA, parents b. Portugal, Dairyfarmer wife Kate 32 b. CA parents b. Ireland ch: Franklin 8 b. CA Perl? I. 9/12 b. CA 1930 US Census Sierra Road, Oakdale, Stanislaus County, CA Frank P. Holmes 47, married 23 years, b. CA parents b. Portugal son Franklyn(sp) 17, CA Elizabeth 11 CA I notice you have a family tree on Ancestry which says Frank was b. in Sao Jorge. Interesting the WWI Draft Registration says he was born in San Luis Obispo????
