My guess is that sometimes the family was so poor, they would use the 
godparent's name if the godparent owned a tree in someone else's plot of land.  
I think if I were in the same situation I would want to give my child the best 
chance to own that tree some time in the future.

They got the names from anyone they wanted....mother, father,
grandmother, grandfather, saint, uncle, aunt.  Best not to try and
figure this one out.
