Hi Greg, If you know he left Sao Miguel in 1878, you can search the "passaportes" online leaving the Azores. http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/ Click on Passaportes on the right, then pick the port of Ponta Delgada. Then choose the years that cover 1878.
You have to access the site through Internet Explorer, unless you are a Mac user, then I think it works with all Mac stuff. You might also want to join the IslandRoutes list too. Mel Lassalle runs that one and she specializes in Azores to HI immigration. Her main web site is www.yourislandroutes.com. My ancestors did not migrate through HI.
