First of all Ben, if you have done so already get a good genealogy program. There is one free on familysearch.org and on the right you will see Free PAF Family History Software that you can download or you can purchase Family Tree Maker which is what I use and there is an assortment of others you can google to find. If you are using an Apple computer, let us know as others might suggest a good one for Apple.
