The 37 marker (or more) is the best for your paternal (Y) DNA. The mtDNA Plus test is best for the strict maternal line, although mtDNA tends to be more anthropological in nature. They do have combination test kits where they will test both Y and mtDNA lines. Nothing wrong with starting off with 12 markers either and then upgrading as the family budget allows. It costs a little bit more that way in the long run. Something like $30 more.
