Hi group.

Something that I recently became curious about was the possiblity that
my great grandfather's parents may have had a child before him. As far
as anyone in my family knows (including him, I suspect) he was the
first born child. His name is Antone Costa. He was born in 1912.
However, his parents married in about 1909 (estimate based on census
information).

This is suspicious because he was not named Manuel and because his
parents were married for three years without any children. I would say
it was possible that they were waiting to come to America, but this is
also not so; when Jose da Costa and Maria de Jesus came over, she was
pregnant with Antone.

Both Jose and Maria de Jesus came from Lagoa; he from Cabuoco and she
from Santa Cruz. I do not know where they lived after marriage from
1909 to 1912. If I'm correct, though, the batismos are not filmed for
1909-1912 so this is not something I would be able to simply browse
around for.

I was looking for input about whether or not it is likely the couple
had children before Antone. While it's completely possible that there
were no previous children, there is also evidence to show there's a
possiblity there could have been.

This may be of note, but I have not been able to locate a birth
certificate for my great grandfather. He believes he was born here in
Massachusetts but I am wondering if he was born in Providence. His
parents did arrive there, but the person they were going to stay with
lived in New Bedford. RI is just the only other place I can think to
search but I haven't had the time to; I can't really travel their if
that's the only record I'm after and I'm not even sure if its there or
not. Is that something someone could check on nehgs?
