The library at San Jose State has archives on microfilm for SJ Mercury. Not sure how far back they have them but I know at least thru 1950's. FYI, some of the more current issues are on library online but obits are not included. And there is a parking garage across the street in case anyone is worried about the parking situation. I don't live there but have used the archives.
