That is so true. I have generations that carry the name and then gone. It's just trying to connect the children to both parents and see what they have for names. Linda Borges Furtado Norton

The best one is the 3rd volume because if has the index of first names and another index of family names. Makes it easy to find the family one is searching. Remember these names, these families are from the 1400s and 1500s. And with some a connection to Portugal. As for family names, you may have the name Vieira from your great-grandfather, your grandfather, your mother, but as you go back in time, the Vieira name has disappeared. You may go back to 1600 and not another Vieira is sighted. I have a Sousa da Costa going back about 4 generations...and that's it...no more Costas, no more Sousas. And what is so interesting is that this line goes back to the 1500s and connects with the Vieira Toledos noted in the next paragraph. I seem to be lucky with my Vieiras, although they are almost always listed as Vieira Toledos, even to the present day. They go all the way back to the marriage of Isabel Vieira and Manuel Toledo Machado about 1550. Which reminds me of a Vieira I met at the Family History Center. Her father's family came from Pico and she had not been able to learn much more about him. She told me on a trip to Portugal she had gone to what she said was the ancestral home of the Vieiras in the North of Portugal. As a result she had bought a complete set of dinner ware with the Vieira coat-of-arms. But... one never knows how many generations back a name goes.
