Manuel,

There is a Manuel deLoura listed. Says he was born in 1870. Lists his wife and
children but offers no further info as to where he was born.

Now I really do need to get to work. I'll gladly look up anything else when I
get home.

hi gayle,

this is all very exciting as i have been researching salt spring pioneers
for some time. the norton's are particularly elusive! the story fits with
oral history except that Flores is cited as the island of his birth (from
his death certificate, census), not Sao Jorge. 1829 is also the year most
commonly given as the year of birth.

i am not familiar with the publication you cite. is there any reference of
when he left the area? is there a reference to his brother, manuel? his
brother, who remained in ssi briefly is referred to as manuel Delarvo,
sometimes spelled as "delavere" or de' larvo".

i met an elderly norton descendant about 10 years, and i do have a copy of
an audio tape of the conversation somewhere. it appears that john norton had
a secret aboriginal family as well. manuel, john's brother supposedy went to
california but no one has been able to locate him.
john norton started a dairy on vancouve island, the nortwest creamery which
remained in the family until the 1970s. lots more research to do on the
portuguese pioneers of saltspring island.
