Hi Joan, You are very early in your family quest for information. All the names you mention are in my files and I am sure in many other's on our list. The thing is that you need to go back at least another gerearation with some good dates of either a birth, baptism, marriage, or death from the parish the person was from. Nossa senhora da Luz would be the parish for Flamengos. Faial is a small Island and at some point we are all related or connected by marriage. Keep at it and with time you'll find more information to grow your family.

Best to all Emil Emil Silveira Currently Researching: Names and Places; Avila, Horta, Angustias, Faial Silveira, Horta, Sao Salvador, Faial Leal, Horta, Angustias, Faial Vargas, Horta, Almoxarife, Faial I, too, am searching for ancestors from Faial. One branch is, according to information from my great-aunt, from Flamengos: family names Pereira (da) Rosa, Silva, Fialho, Gonsalves. The earliest dates I have are for Thomas Pereira Rose, b. 1833 in Flamengos, Faial, d. 1929 in Fremont (Alvarado), CA. He married Maria Claudina Fialho in Mission San Jose, CA, dau. of Joao Fialho and Maria Claudina. According to the notes from my g-aunt: Thomas Rose came to San Francisco on a whaling ship & jumped ship to go to the gold fields during the Gold Rush. He returned to the Alvarado area and bought 17 acres from George Patterson with proceeds from his gold panning. After a few years he paid passage for Maria Claudina Fialho to come from the Azores to marry him. He did not know her personally, so in essence she was a "mail-order bride." She stayed with relatives in Decoto (Union City) and he gave her six months to decide if she wanted to marry him. The property remained in the family until Thomas's daughter, Rita, sold it in 1958. [Rita was the second child, born June 06, 1872, in Fremont (Alvarado), CA, and died April 1967 in Fremont.] I do not (yet) have birth and death dates for Thomas Pereira Rose, Jr., the oldest child. Thomas & Maria Claudina's third child was my g-grandmother, Anna Eugenia Pereira Rose (b. April 22, 1878, Fremont (Alvarado), CA; d. December 31, 1963, Fremont). Anna Eugenia married Manuel Gonsalves da Silva on Dec. 30, 1893, in Fremont (Centerville), CA. I have a picture of my g-grandparents & their 7 living children from c. 1939 (my mother identified everyone in the picture for me); I knew my G-Grandma Silva, though not well (I was 14 y.o. when she died). Do any of these people sound familiar? For now, I am hypothesizing that Maria Claudina Fialho came from Flamengos, Faial. I am not certain what village Manuel Gonsalves da Silva was from, but he also was an immigrant from Faial, possibly(?) Flamengos. Too bad I wasn't interested in family history when my G-Grandma Silva was still alive. :-( I am eagerly awaiting the time when the Faial records come on-line, though I may be able to make a trip to Faial before that, given the slow pace of digitizing and up-loading. |-O Joan Jurancich joa...@surewest.net -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
