Dear Listers,

I have been reminded as I followed the last number of emails regarding the
spelling of "Portugal" on Ancestry that no index should ever be relied
upon as "gospel". You always need to read the original record to verify
what the index has listed. Last evening as I helped a patron at our Family
History Center I had this fact brought home to me once again. We were
looking for his Italian grandparents, Giovanni and Maria/Marie Crivello.
We couldn't find them at first so we started looking for their children,
some from previous marriages ,Davi, and some of their own, Crivello. We
finally found the family in Pittsburg, Contra Costa, California under
CARSWELLS! In 1910. Giovanni was using John for one but Carswells?? We
clicked on "view image" and their they were. The original writing of
Crivello was written over but I don't really understand how the indexer
read Carswells as their were Crivellos in the household listed as John's
sons! It just proves that indexes are not infalible and you should always
check the original document if you can.
