It seems to me we have females have lost another battle to be identified as female! Just my take on this naming tradition. Celeste

Portuguese people used gender on surnames long ago, think that doesnt happen today. Ex: Coelho, Coelha; Machado, Machada. You will notice that today records are without gender: Coelho, Machado, Gato, etc.. Fortunata is feminine for FORTUNATO. Today records are shown as FORTUNATO Karlushko - Itajai/SC/Brasil - New York/USA Pesquisando: Alemanha, Belgica, Brasil, Luxemburgo, Italia, Portugal, Açores, Espanha Agueda, Aguiar, André, Antunes, Arruda, Baptista, Beirao, Brasil, Bulcão, Cardoso, Correia, Costa, Dias, Dutra, Faria, Fernandes, Ferreira, Figueiro, Gaspar, Gato, Gomes Gonçalves, Guedes, Jorge, Leal, Lemos, Macedo, Machado, Marques, Martins, Matos, Mello, Miranda, Moreira, Nascimento, Netto, Nogueira, Nunes, Oliveira, Pereira, Ponte, Quadrado, Rebello, Rodrigues, Santos, Silva, Silveira, Simão, Sodré, Souza, Vieira, Zabuya, Fiorenzano, Bertemes, Reinert, Ottekier, Van der Gocht, de Pres, Hesse, Laux, Schumer, Jungklaus. ________________________________ De: Shirl Sereque <shirl.sere...@frontier.com> Para: azores@googlegroups.com Cc: Cheri Mello <gfsche...@gmail.com> Enviadas: Domingo, 15 de Abril de 2012 15:23 Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jewish names Hi, all (again)! Karlushko gave me names of books to check out, some of which I already have, and others I will look into. But I still would like answers to the following questions: 1.) According to Geneall and Azores Genealogy, Abraham Seriqui's mother was FORTUNATA (no surname given). I did read somewhere that the first son had the father's surname and the second son had the mother's surname. Would that mean her surname was SERIQUI? When Abraham died in Boston, his mother's name was listed as ESTHER MARKS. Which would be correct? 2.) Abraham had a daughter, MIRIAM (MARIANA) BENSABAT (her mother's surname), BENSAUDE, BENARUS (her father's surname). Two questions: Which first name did she go by. Miriam or the Jewish version, Mariana? She has BENSAUDE in her name, but the Bensaudes say we're not related. Why would that be in her name, when it's not in her siblings' names? This name was found in Geneall and Azores Genealogy. 3.) Another ancestor (in Geneall and Ancestry) married JOAQUIM AFLALO (ISAAC OHAMA). Why the two very different names? Which is really "my" ancestor? (Which tree should I be looking for?) Thanking you in advance for any information. - Shirl - -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive.
