The reason why I asked about whaling is that my grt grt grandfather ran away from the family farm on Faial at 16 yrs old in 1884 to go whaling on the Charles W Morgan. After 8 months the Morgan went back to Faial to resupply and he went home. But he heard so much about the USA from the crew in 1888 he came to new Bedford for good.
