Saw this article in the San Jose Mercury News on Wednesday and sharing with the group because of her exceptional long life but also because she will remind many of you of a cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, great aunt or old neighbor. Julia Machado Rose January 27, 1902 - September 21, 2012 Resident of San Jose, Santa Cruz and Port Angeles, WA. Julia Machado Rose passed peacefully on September 21, 2012, after enjoying life for 110 +; years. God granted Julia her wish to depart this life asleep in her bed with her saints' statues cloistered about her. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Rose, and her son Lester Rose, and son-in-law George Jenott. Julia is survived by her daughter Margaret Jenott, daughter-in-law Alice Rose, nine grandchildren: Mikki Jenott, Stephanie Indelicato, Jim Rose (Marilyn), Jamie Jenott (Eric), Ken Rose (Loretta), Kim Jenott, Terri Rose Bacica (Nick), Jill Jenott Haueter (James) and Lisa Rose Lovelace (Zane), 16 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, and friends. Julia was born on January 27, 1902, in the small village of Candelaria, on the island of Pico, in Azores, Portugal. She was the third of nine children born to Manual and Felicidade Machado. In 1922, Julia, chaperoned by her uncle Alfred, traveled to the United States of America to marry Joseph Rose, who had arrived from Candelaria a few years earlier. They married on December 2, 1922 in Atwater, CA, then moved to Santa Clara, CA and eventually settled in San Jose, CA. After both working very hard, Joe as a carpenter and Julia in the canneries, they purchased 4 lots and built 3 houses and a duplex. They were blessed with a daughter, Margaret, and a son, Lester. After her husband passed on, Julia continued to live in their home on Shortridge Ave. in San Jose for a total of 50 years. She loved the location of her home as she could walk to her beloved Five Wounds Catholic Church for weekday and Sunday masses with her good friends. As she progressed in age, Julia's granddaughter Jamie Jenott, lovingly offered to be her caregiver and roommate. In 2002, Julia sold the properties and moved to Santa Cruz, CA where she lived for the next nine years. In late 2011, she and Jamie moved to Port Angeles, WA. Julia had many joys in her long life, but four were predominant - her family, her Catholic faith, crocheting, and TV soap operas. She loved when family and friends would come and visit. Julia would entertain us with stories of her life back in the "old country", of her long voyage across the sea to her new homeland and life in the U.S.A., of her favorite saints and our Lady of Fatima. Julia was very proud of her Portuguese heritage and raised her family to know and appreciate the culture and food especially filozes, sweet bread, linguica, sopas, and her favorite sausage - morcela. She belonged to numerous Portuguese societies such as Council Senhora de Lourdes for 84 years, Bom Jesus, Our Lady of Fatima and St. Anthony. But she also passionately embraced the American way of life and was very proud to be an American citizen. Julia would gladly tell you her opinion on any past or current trends, events or politicians. She was a dedicated soap opera fan of the Young and the Restless, the Bold and the Beautiful, One Life to Live and General Hospital. Julia called them "stories" and the characters were her "company" and she never missed an episode. When she turned 100, to Julia's delight each of these soap operas sent her congratulatory wishes. She was also a crocheting fanatic and crocheted everyday while watching her "stories", averaging two lap blankets a month which she gave to family, friends and charities. Julia would say more than anything else these four things kept her young and alert. Oh, yes, the shot of Kahlua she enjoyed in her afternoon coffee probably helped as well! Julia (Ma, Grandma, Vava, Tia) was a hard working, strong willed, passionate, and deeply religious person with an undying love for her family. We are so grateful to her and will miss her more than words can say. "Nossa Senhora de Fatima abrace Julia com amor" "Our Lady of Fatima embrace Julia with love". The viewing, Rosary and funeral mass will held at Five Wounds Catholic Church, 1375 E. Santa Clara St., San Jose, CA at 10:00am followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to any Catholic or Portuguese charity would be appreciated.
