John, I can't speak for anyone but myself, but to me history = facts -- and
those who seek to rewrite and mythologize their history in order to suit
their vanity are a pox upon the pursuit of truth.

Bear in mind that I came from a family that concealed its Portugueseness
from me -- claiming to have been "Flemish" (yes, I know there were some
Flemings who settled in the Azores, but this was pure sophistry on my
family's part, perhaps to avoid prejudice but in my view perpetuating the
prejudice at least by omission -- and when I discovered the truth about my
father's family's origins in some old documents, I was initially denounced
as "mistaken" by an elderly aunt who was part of the concealment plot (she
later slashed my equal share of her estate in her will to a pittance, in
retaliation for my continuing to pursue my Luso roots).

Katharine.
