Hi Linda,
It's my understanding that if a person has witnesses that will attest to the
fact that they've been "using" the property for 20 years or more it then
becomes theirs. If your family hasn't been paying the taxes you may no longer
have any claim. There are plenty of lawyers on Pico to consult.

Does your family still pay the property tax?

Hi,
Something similar in my family. Cousin in Faial let some people stay in our
grandfathers house and after so many years it's theirs.

Something like homesteading or squatting.

There has been a piece of property in our family that my grandparents bought
many years ago. From what I understand it was rented out, but the renters quit
paying rent at least 20 years ago. Apparently, my aunt is having a hard time
figuring out what to do. She has contacted some relatives there, but hasn't
had much success. This is about 6 acres (supposedly very nice) in Lages do
Pico, I'm guessing it is near Almagreira since that is the area where my
grandparents were from, but I'm not sure of the exact location.

We were wondering if someone on this group has some ideas on what to do. How
do we find out whose name is on this property and what is happening with it?

Thanks for your help.

Linda Leitz
