*Although I was born in California, I speak and understand Portuguese
reasonably well and even read and write enough Portuguese, both Azorean and
Brazilian (including some slang), to write letters to friends and
relatives in both the Azores and Brazil (my late wife was Brazilian and we
were married almost 21 years). I was born 4 years after my mother
immigrated to the US, so I didn't speak much English until I started
school. By the time I started high school, I had forgotten most of my
Portuguese, but a whole family of cousins immigrated from the Azores and I
started speaking it again. After grad school, I got a chance to work in
Brazil where I met my wife and the rest is history. Now when I go to the
Azores, I am sometimes asked what part of Brazil I'm from. Similarly, some
Brazillians will say that I have an "Island" accent.
I went to all this preamble to say that I absolutely am hopeless with
French,.. can't begin to understand it. I took Spanish in High School and
get along reasonably well. I can even get along in Italian, but French is a
big ZERO.
