A lot of people turn off their 12 marker matches. My dad probably has about 1000 matches at the 12 marker level. That level means that my dad and the match has a common ancestor thousands of years ago. Since my pedigree doesn't go back to Fred Flintstone, I take my dad's 12 marker matches off (there's a setting for that on the FTDNA personal page).
Now if you have a rare surname, or rare DNA, then the 12 marker may have some limited uses.
