I don't know if it's usual or quite often that an alcunha is "assigned" to a person by others. It's not always the most flattering thing. I'm sure the many Portuguese natives can enlighten the rest of us about this.

There is the example from my father's book, Portuguese Pioneers of the Sacramento Area, in which it mentions the Nordeste family from Piedade, Pico. The person with that alcunha was given it because one eye looked off in another direction. Someone there came up with "north east" (Nordeste) which was then passed down through the later generations.

So if someone was bug-eyed, I suppose they might be called Bicho by others.
Or maybe they were an avid entomologist.

Maybe that particular person had that eye disease, that bulge.  Whatever that word is for those buggy eyes.
