Rick, I don't think you should read too much into the name without evidence. My understanding is that the slaves were given family names by the owners precisely because they were slaves and property. They don't get to choose their names. Occasionally you will see a slave who has a child by an owner and is recognized and legitimatised by the owner. But this is rare. I know of one in Povoacao. And RR wrote about his descendancy because they were prominent.
