Hi Shirley,

Thanks for that. I am so far behind in checking into all the angles of these Aguiar families.
I just wanted to let you know I appreciate the info. How did you come across it? Is it in the Terceira volume John Raposo mentioned? I wish I didn't have to ask that. It's an old complaint of mine that must be tiring to hear about over and over...

But maybe the earliest Praia Matriz records revealed that to you. I have not done much in those records yet. Still working my way back.

I have one set of ancestors that is a real tough nut to crack from Praia Matriz. I think there are some on this list with these same ancestors, though I never mentioned them to anyone before. Their names are Maria de Borba and Francisco Correia. They had lots of kids in Praia Matriz in the middle 1600s. But they didn't marry there and I have not yet located their marriage. I has a suspicion they married in some place like Quatro Ribeiras where the records no longer exist or are in such bad shape we can't really do much to reconstruct the oldest families of the village. But I keep hoping... and I think I know the Borba line from the padrinhos, but have not yet proven it.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] João de Aguiar of Quatro Ribeiras, Terceira

Hi John,

Does the Ornelas Mendes volume for Terceira mention another child or two of João de Aguiar?
I think he might have had many, based on surname usage of some families at that time in the records.

I remember reading about Padre Maldonado's ancestry being unknown and that it was suspected his family had come from somewhere other than Praia or Angra. So I found it interesting that he himself mentioned some family links. But that might be something from a book by Ferreira Drummond which is now approaching 200 years old and maybe someone discovered his family in recent times.

I'll have to look for Maldonado's comments in Fénix Angrense.. Thank's for referencing that!

I wonder if there is any mention of the Aguiar origins and if maybe he came over from Sao Miguel or Madeira, or straight from the continent.

I'm also sending this message to the list, since there are several people interested. But it might never appear there, since it seems all my messages end up in the que as spam, according to Cheri.

Obrigado,
