Pam S, I'm not sure about FTM.
I take the other file and import it as it's own file/family/project. After making sure the data entry is the same as mine, I save it again. Then I go to File >Import and it asks if I want to merge that file with my own. Somewhat over simplistic. You can make a file/family/project with one obvious person (Bugs Bunny) and try a merge with him. That way, you only have to delete one "person" if you don't do the import right.
