Liliana,

If it's Areia, look for "d'Areia" or "da Area" and maybe in Calheta, where I found some who are originally from Piedade, Pico. Calheta is where my own Areia family is from. Maybe we're related.

You might consider getting the Family Finder DNA test, too. I have written about it on my website:

Good luck.

Thanks for the thoughts, Rick. My biggest obstacle is not having any records that refer to his origins on Sao Jorge. I only have a notation in the family Bible: John Harris, born on Sao Jorge, the Western Islands, and the same on his marriage certificate. I have no idea which village he came from. I found nothing in the Ellis Island records. I'll keep at it. This is like a treasure hunt!

That is a tough one to answer, his first name in Portuguese is Joao As far as his last name if I were to guess I would say Henrique but that does not seem right. When you say (in the records), what records? In order to search the islands in the Acores it is important to know the Freguesia (village) where he came from. You should search all US sources to determine that. One way would be to find when he came to the US and then search passport records if they are available.

I'm brand to new genealogy, so I hope the experts out there will forgive some basic questions. All I know at this point is that my great-grandfather's name was John Harris (in the records) and he was from Sao Jorge. Any ideas on what his Portuguese (birth) name might have been? Thanks!
