Could have been a little of both - perhaps a DNA test can answer ;) Actually, 
it was somewhat common practice for a prominent person in the parish to act as 
godfather (padrinho), or witness (testemunha), for church ceremonies. You will 
also see regular church members step up and help out with baptisms of the poor 
and unwanted children that were brought to, or left at, the church. Sometimes 
these children were placed in the homes of such parishioners (criados).
