Emil,

Thank you, I did find the article interesting. It seems that they started the
process of ending slavery with several laws in the 1700’s and then another
round in the 1800’s to completely end slavery.

Hi Erica,

I have attached an article from The New York Times of 24 May 1869. You and
others may find it interesting and useful.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Slavery in Azores

I recently found out that my husband’s 7th great-grandfather was listed as a
black slave in his marriage record according to Canto’s index. I am very
interested in finding out what life was like for slaves in Azores in the early
1700’s. I am hoping people in this group can suggest some books or websites
that are informative on this subject.

I don’t expect that I will find much information on his ancestor directly, but
I am hoping to gather some information about what his life might have been
like, how he might have gained his freedom in order to be married, and how his
bride might have been treated during their marriage and after he passed away
(they were only married for 6 years before he died).

Thank you in advance for your ideas.

Erica Botelho
