Thanks Cheri, I did as you suggested and looked for siblings. As it turns out, it appears that Manuel b. 1852 was the youngest child in the family. He had an older brother, Manuel b. 1842, plus two sisters named Rosa and brothers Antonio and Francisco. Now I'll have to look in Obitos for the first time. The oldest child was Maria b. 1838. Their mother's full name was Maria Rosa de Medeiros. Fortunately the maternal grandparents were listed in all the other baptisms: Antonio Francisco da Costa and Rosa Maria de Medeiros. It appears that this is the case where the mother's surname was chosen. Now I need to translate all these other baptisms. Wish me luck!
