Actually I think the latest version is FTM 2013. FTM 16 is an upgraded version to FTM 2006. Since then they have had a new version almost every year. The last one that I bought was FTM 2011. I got tired of the constant upgrades with FTM and now use another program that is not going to change any time in the future.
I do not think you would have any problems importing your 2006 files to a new version. If you keep your old computer running at the same time or if it is still running you could also save a GEDCOM file which you could transfer to any GEDCOM supported software.
