I went with Dave Furtado on my very first trip to the Azores. While we were researching in the archive, he's tracing his Furtado line. He went back to a guy named Polycarpo Furtado. I remember sitting there, saying, "Who would name their kid Polycarpo?" I got to learn that there was a St. Policarpo. Anyways, all of Polycarpo's lines immigrated except Dave's. They stayed behind another generation or 2. That's why he's a Furtado. But the ones that came to America? They found too many Furtados for their liking. So they became the Furtado Polycarpos. Jim Costa came from one of those lines and traced ALL the Furtado Polycarpos back to Polycarpo Furtado.
