I have been researching my paternal side of my family "Machado" or in the Azores d'Azevedo Machado. I have found all the birth records for my great grandfather and his brothers and I have found 5 of the 9 in the united states. I have run into on the obit for my 2x great grandmother Maria Borba in 1913 that two of the sons may have taken either their mothers last name or their step fathers last name which in this case is the same "Borba". On another brother's obit in 1930 for Anton Machado it lists one of the brothers again as "Borba", but when I get to the final brother to pass Michael Machado the obit it lists the two brothers that were previously labeled "Borba" now as Machado. I have attached each of those obits to this post. In this case it is Jose/Joseph Borba/Machado and John Borba/Machado. How common is this?
