My ‘favorite’ name change is this: my husband’s grandfather was Jose Pedro Leite. HIS father, grandfather and many if not all of his uncles were “ ---- Pedro Leite’s”. Well, one of his uncles was Joao Pedro Leite. Came to America, became John Peter Leite. As he went back and forth to the Azores several times, I can track him in the ship records. Suddenly he is John Leite Peters, and all of his posterity to this day bear the Peters surname.
I confirmed it was him because of information in the ship records: wife’s name, address in Providence, etc. Plus, my husband’s grandfather had once said he had cousins named Peters, a puzzling statement at the time. We're all familiar with the more common changes such as Pereira to Perry. However one of my lines went from Medeiros to Medas to Meetis all in the span of fifty years or so. Another changed from Manuel Rego to something entirely different because he didn't want to be confused with his cousin, another Manuel Rego in the same town. Brick walls are everywhere.
