Sounds like my great grandfather I was not able to find him arriving in New
York until I found him leaving Ponta Delgada. That time period at the turn of
the century when many of our ancestors used two names My great grandfather left
as Pimentel and arrived as Furtado. My grandmother left later and her and the
children arrived under her maiden name.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Mary Vieira Silva

Hi all,

Just had to share my great find while in SLC!

I have been searching for my Grandmother coming to the USA for 30 years or
more. She always said she came in through the Port of NY in Sept 1914 and on
her Alien Registration Papers she listed that her name as Maria Vieira da Silva
when she arrived. That is what I've searched for, Maria Vieira da Silva coming
on that date. Now, the Angra passports have now come online and I thought that
I would search for EVERY Maria I saw on that list from August to the end of
Sept 1914 and see what I could see because I've never been able to find her on
the dates she gave under the name she gave. So, when I had time between
teaching classes and helping the other researchers, I searched. On Thursday,
right before lunch, I found her! She came under the surname of her mother,
Azevedo!! Sure enough, it said Maria d'Azevedo, 17 years, single from Norte
Grande, daughter of Francisco Vieira da Silva and Maria d'Azevedo! I'm sure
everyone in Basement 1 heard me, I was so excited! But the moral of the story
for all Portuguese researchers is, don't give up on the search and don't
believe everything your Grandparents said or wrote!! LOL

>From this info I found her on the ship Patria and feel wonderful that I've
>finally found my Va!!
