de ele (of him) usually contracted as "dele". 

It says "...Manuel Joaquim da Silva, madrinha a mulher de ele Philomena..." 
 This would mean the same as Manuel e a sua mulher..., just saying "wife of 
him" instead of "his wife".  

I just don't understand why Manuel's wife's name changed from Margarida to 
Philomena between the two parts of the record.  It doesn't say Margarida, 
ja defuncta, so I would expect that he has the same wife in both paragraphs.

My wife helped me out with the word in the 1865 Topo record that I had 
trouble with.  It is então and it was saying that Roza Victorina (the 
maternal grandmother) was single at the time of her daughter's birth (but 
presumably married sometime after that)
