Looking at the names on the baptism of Anna the writer in transitioning from the capitol “A” to the small “r” made the “r” more elaborate than normal. In both cases the name on this record is “Aruda” in todays spelling Arruda. Going back to the marriage record it now looks that the writer wrote in the same way Aru – da. The Aru is squeezed together making it hard to read.

I have the baptisms of four of their children, and Antonia's surname is given as "dos Santos" on all but one of them. I was thinking of it as her religious name, but it could be a surname. I like the suggestion of "de Ruda" however, because two of the children had, as godparents, children of Joana Tavares, widow of Joam de Arruda. (Actually, it looks more like "Aluda," and I was wondering whether Joana's late husband might have been a relative and whether Antonia's surname could have been either Arruda or Almeida. Here is the link to one of the baptisms (Anna, right page, top): http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-RELVA-B-1743-1760/SMG-PD-RELVA-B-1743-1760_item1/P89.html Thanks again for the input. You have to look for the children born to this couple or all the marriages of their children to figure it out.. The first letter is definitely not an “M” and the writer spelled all the other names out fully so an abbreviation there makes no sense. I am not sure but the name is not common. (Right page, lines 19-20.) I've been staring at it for two days and am totally baffled. Here's what I have: Francisco de Couto, filho de Antonio do Couto, e de Antonia de __________? What looks like a three-letter word or abbreviation ends the line, and the next line starts with "da." In context the word "da" does not make sense, so I believe it is a continuation of the three-letters on the previous line. I've checked the Family Search guides to Portuguese paleography and can't find anything that matches. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-RELVA-C-1762-1780/SMG-PD-RELVA-C-1762-1780_item1/P94.html I will appreciate any insights or advice you can offer.
