It is very important to distinguish between adopted and foster children.
Adoption ("perfilhacoes") in the Azores is much rarer than it is in the US.
However, legal adoptions in the Azores, is a Court process with detailed legal
documents. However, information on biological parents, just like in the US, is
likely to be sealed. The vast majority of foundlings, if they survived at all,
were never adopted. These children were placed "dados a criar" in the care
of.....as foster children.  Many died, some were moved from pillar to post, and
the lucky ones stayed with the family with which they were initially placed.

Yes. Ponta Delgada has whole books dedicated to foundlings in Sao Pedro and
Sao Sebastiao. Not sure about Sao Pedro, they may have been dovetailed into Sao
Sao Sebastiao. You will not get much out of the books, save where they were
found and perhaps which family they were given to.

We got a really good DNA hit on my uncle who is searching for his grandparents
who were both foundlings.  The hit was 202cMs X Match.  This is the best hit so
far.  The bad news is that his hit was ADOPTED!  Her birthdate is 1931 and we
have her adopted parents names.  She was born in Ponta Del Gado.  Do these
adoption records exist?  Her adoptive father was born in Brazil and the
adoptive  mother from Lisbon.  They lived in the Azores.
