Hi,

I first ‘met’ Joao abt 2002 via the Rootsweb list, when I began researching
my grandmother’s family. He’s outstanding.

Cheers,

*Subject:* [AZORES-Genealogy] Attending the Azores Conference and Joao
Ventura

Hello: I have been an member of this group for sometime but have never
taken the opportunity to post. I finally have a good reason.

I was one of the fortunate few who was able to attend the Azores Genealogy
Conference this past week. This was my third time attending as I live in
Utah. I want to thank Cheri and Rosemarie for the outstanding job they
always do with the entire conference. Everything is arranged so well and
the sessions are so good. I invited my cousin to attend for the first time
and she got a lot out of it. It was wonderful to meet almost 40 of you who
attended. It was a great experience over all.

One tidbit that really helped me was Cheri's and Rosemarie's suggestion
that for $20 we could get Joao Ventura (the genealogist not the gearhead)
to find a document. I don't know why I hadn't used his research services in
the past! I had one great-grandfather that I had not been able to make the
leap to the Azores (I'm full blooded Azorean).

Within a half hour of emailing Joao, he responded that he had found the
family and was prepared to provide the documents from whomever I wanted. So
I requested 4 documents ($80) and he sent them early in the morning US time
the very next day. I was overwhelmed with joy! I had looked for these
people for years and years. I had 17 US sources for them but none listed
the Azores' city. Joao was able to search his database and found them in
Sao Miguel. I didn't know his database extended to that island.

He provides not only the documents but a transcription in Portuguese as
well as a summary in English. It was so amazing! I just can't say enough
about Joao and his work, especially the speed at which he is able to work
because of so many years of entering data. I highly recommend him and am
grateful to Cheri and Rosemarie for doing so.

I can read the Portuguese records pretty well and would be glad to help out
with some basic translation, though I'm sure that there are others here who
can do better. Thanks for providing this great resource.
