I saw some records wera the man was said “died on the sea”.

To anothers, it seems exist a law with a definition on the time of the
disapearence. I see a old paper with a sentence like that.

 

I saw too a lot of batism with this expression : “son of Maria wife of
Manoel absent”.

 

To the difficulties of this wives, il’s important to know that, on this
time, the family solidarity was very strong (different of our time).

But if a husband had died at sea, wouldn't the crew have told his family
back home when they returned? Then the wife would be a widow, not a married
woman. Or would they have said nothing to his family and left them
wondering?
